Dictionary of Ichthyology

snare = a running noose on the end of a pole that can be used to catch a fish. It may be passive with the fish's movements causing the snare to close or more usually it is actively used when fish in shallow water, such as on spawning grounds, have a snare slipped over their head and pulled tight. The snare may be baited or run through a hollow stick (stick-snare).
